FAQ's
I've listed below some of the most frequently asked questions, however please do book a call if you want to discuss your specific requirements.
What's the difference between Coaching and Therapy?
Coaching primarily focusses on the future and the goals that someone wants to achieve, where as therapy tends to look at the past. Therapy is more restorative in nature, seeking to support someone to address emotional difficulties, it is also explorative and open ended (i.e we won't have set finish date) . Where as Coaching seeks to build on already established foundations, and seeks to create change regarding a specific area of your life; it is also is time limited.
I don't have contact with therapy clients outside of the session, beyond emails regarding appointments. Where-as coaching includes regular email and phone contact for the duration of the coaching package.
Should I choose Therapy or Coaching?
Anyone can (and perhaps should) access therapy, as the journey of personal discovery can be rich and rewarding, leading to deep new personal insights. Equally coaching can be a transformative experience, supporting you to add increased focus into specific areas of your life.
However for those experiencing current emotional difficulties I strongly recommend therapy rather than coaching as it is important to feel balanced about your current (or past) circumstance before looking to the future.
Where and when would we meet?
I meet therapy clients online via Zoom. For Therapy we would have weekly appointments that last 50 minutes, and that are set at the same time each week.
Coaching I suggest fortnightly appointments, but I can be more flexible with timing.
Most of my appointments are during the week (Monday - Thursday) during the day, though I do offer a limited number of weekend appointments.
How do I pay?
For most Therapy clients I ask that they pay in advance of the sessions via bank transfer.
A Coaching package is paid for in advance of the sessions, though I am happy to split payments in to three monthly payment should you wish. Some may have employers that want to pay for Coaching in which case I will directly invoice them.
What if I can't make a session?
Please do let me know at least 48 hours in advance if you can't make a session; though more notice is preferred. I do charge for missed appointments unless there are exceptional circumstances.
I will always give you at least a weeks notice if I can not attend an appointment, and will in most circumstances tell clients about my planned holidays months in advance.
Do I need to sign anything?
At the start of work together we will make some agreements about how we will work together. We will also sign a formal contract outlining both of our responsibilities.
How much notice to I need to give?
For coaching clients we have a set number of sessions that we agree to in advance.
I would always encourage therapy clients to finish working with me in a planned way, giving three weeks notice if possible. Endings of relationships are important for both parties as they are a way to reflect on the work done, and progress made.
What about confidentiality?
Both coaching and therapy are confidential, and I will not discuss our sessions with anyone else other than my clinical supervisor. They are also bound by confidentiality and we both work within the ethical guidelines set down by the British Association of Counsellors and Psychotherapists found here.
If your coaching package is paid for by an employer I will contract with you rather than your organisation. I will not discuss any element of our sessions with your employer without your explicit permission.
I will only breach confidentiality if I believe there is an immediate and significant risk of harm to you or others, and by doing so it will make that person at risk safer. In practice this rarely happens and if I did breach confidentiality on the grounds of safety I would try to discuss this with you in advance.
I may be obliged to provide information if ordered to do so by a Court.
I do keep brief notes of sessions, and these are stored securely and comply with GDPR. My privacy notice can be found here. I am registered with the Information Commissioners Office
